In System’s Void, Sung Tieu translates danger signals from Hazardous Gas System (HGS) at four different fracking wells across the United States into sound. HGS technology monitors leaks and concentrations of hazardous gases, generating warnings that are usually confined to technical infrastructure and are imperceptible to the public. Tieu’s sonic interpretation is amplified through the large pipe in the Museum’s central staircase. The accompanying video projection animates streams of chemical codes, numerical designations used to classify chemicals. By converting warning data into vibration and sound, System’s Void makes latent conditions tangible.
