A gradient field of warm, fading light washes across one of the Whitney Museum’s outdoor terraces, where architecture and sky merge at dusk. The image marks a choreographic vantage point in magic hour–golden time, scoring the relationship between light, duration, and the body in space.

These photographs by Jonathan González are stills enlarged from Super 8 film. They picture the spaces on the Museum’s outdoor terraces where dancers perform González’s magic hour–golden time. Labeled A, B, and C, the images correspond to the locations of the first, second, and third hours of the performance. The terms “magic hour” and “golden time” refer to the warm, diffuse light around sunset and the time of day that draws the largest number of television viewers.
