This sculpture is Malcolm Peacock’s interpretation of a coastal redwood tree, which he encountered on multiple trips to the Pacific Northwest. Its surface comprises about 3,500 braids, which Peacock made by hand over ten months. As a long-distance runner, Peacock often explores ideas of endurance and performance in his work. The texts on the surface of the sculpture are excerpts from the autobiographies of Frederick Douglass and Malcolm X.
