In this video and sound installation, Ruanne Abou-Rahme and Basel Abbas express what they have described as collective feelings of love and longing felt by many Palestinians in the wake of erasure of land and communities in Palestine. The texts, sounds, and images that appear and then recede throughout Until we became fire and fire us create what the artists call “forms of hauntings.” Punctuated by drawings Abou-Rahme’s father made in Jerusalem in the 1970s and 1980s and other layers of ephemera, the three-channel video weaves together traditional songs with contemporary footage of indigenous plants that resist eradication.
