In Sis Miranda Haymon portrays the romance that unfolds between two Black women after what the artist describes as a “cosmic meet-cute.” The film plays with the conventions of romantic comedy and upends our assumptions about the genre. Haymon integrates various formal devices, such as a carefully crafted dramatic score, light and animation effects that simultaneously punctuate and denaturalize the narrative, and intimate dialogues that place the absurdity of modern romantic comedies in relief. The film underscores the intricate and sometimes discordant manner in which the lived reality of social relationships is constructed in contemporary society.
