ektor garcia has said that “emotionality is political,” echoing the second-wave feminist dictum that “the personal is political” but deepening it to communicate the ways that the expressive qualities of the artist’s works speak to the politics of labor, migration, colonization, and gender. Born in California but in constant movement back and forth across the United States–Mexico border with family as a child, garcia has developed a nomadic studio practice, with travel becoming an important part of the way the artist conceives and makes work. garcia often works in media that is portable, such as crochet, and that lends itself to a constant stream of creation during travel. In some cases, garcia has learned craft techniques from family members or community; in others, garcia has developed skills by researching Indigenous Mesoamerican objects.
