Virtual Environment
The Whitney's virtual landscape is a space for convening, conversation, and exhibitions. Originally created by Design Bridge and hosted by Mozilla Hubs, it was launched in June 2023 to host a virtual convening of artists included in the exhibition Refigured. A new version of the environment, produced by James Tunick: CEO the IMC Lab, is now accessible on MONA. The Whitney plans to continue growing this virtual space and to host events and programming within it. Visitors can explore the environment online and see elements of works from the collection at any time.
Virtual Programming
Twin Quasar
2024
Ashley Zelinskie’s Twin Quasar is a three-dimensional artwork and space in the Whitney Museum Virtual Landscape that intertwines science with art history, building on the artist’s eight-year coordination with NASA's James Webb Space Telescope team and discussions with Tim Rawle, a scientist at the European Space Agency. The work uses two pieces from the Whitney Museum’s collection — László Moholy-Nagy’s painting Space Modulator (1938–1940) and Rosalind Bengelsdorf Browne’s watercolor Compotier II (1938) — as sources and turns them into navigable 3D models, drawing parallels between phenomena in physics and the artists' exploration of space and form.
Refigured
2023
Drawn from the Whitney’s collection and including video, animation, sculpture, and augmented reality, the works in Refigured reflect on interactions between digital and physical materiality.
On June 22, 2023, curator Christiane Paul was joined by Refigured artists Morehshin Allahyari, American Artist, Zach Blas, Auriea Harvey, and Rachel Rossin for the inaugural event hosted online in the new virtual venue.
