Hacia finales de la turbulenta década de los sesenta, el poeta John Ashbery escribió: “Todos ‘crecimos surreales’ sin siquiera tener conciencia de ello”. Para ese entonces el movimiento surrealista, que había iniciado en París en la década de 1920, y que había inspirado a artistas como Salvador Dalí y René Magritte a explorar el mundo de los sueños y el inconsciente, influía en el cine, la danza, el diseño, la moda y la publicidad. El surrealismo impregnaba las capas más profundas de la cultura estadounidense, aunque a menudo se le consideraba insípido o pasado de moda, especialmente en el mundo del arte de Nueva York. Pero para muchos de los artistas de la década de los sesenta, el surrealismo (o la idea más general de lo “surreal”) se convirtió en una fuerza liberadora. Ofrecía una manera de hacer arte en medio de profundos cambios culturales, como el movimiento por los derechos civiles, la exploración espacial, el miedo a una guerra nuclear, la cultura de las drogas, la guerra de Vietnam, asesinatos políticos, así como las revoluciones sexuales queer y feministas.

Sesentas surreales propone una visión radicalmente nueva de esta década, y argumenta que las tendencias surrealistas figuraron entre las fuerzas más importantes que dieron forma al arte contemporáneo en los Estados Unidos. La exposición incluye obras producidas entre 1958 y 1972 por más de cien artistas. Estos artistas de diversos orígenes se inspiraron en la imaginación surrealista para expresar las cualidades psicosexuales, fantásticas, espirituales, extrañas y revolucionarias de su tiempo. Esta exposición está estructurada en torno a temas que surgieron en los sesenta, especialmente aquellos que desafiaron al estatus quo, así como en torno a otras exposiciones contemporáneas y redes de artistas. Pero aún estos momentos contraculturales estaban marcados por restricciones geográficas, segregación racial y el escaso reconocimiento de las mujeres. Challenging what we think we know about art of the 1960s, this volume moves beyond the established movements of pop art, minimalism, and conceptualism to shine a light on how American artists created a unique type of surrealism, making works suffused with eroticism, dread, wonder, violence, and liberation. A series of essays reveals how this new surrealism enabled artists to reconnect art to an increasingly untethered reality following the period of rapid postwar transformation and to imagine new worlds and models for art rooted in political and social change. Presenting a new framework to understand the work of artists such as Lee Bontecou, Franklin Williams, Nancy Grossman, Mel Casas, Yayoi Kusama, Jim Nutt, John Outterbridge, Ralph Arnold, H. C. Westermann, Romare Bearden, Louise Bourgeois, Christina Ramberg, and Robert Arneson, this study features an expansive chronology that highlights how a broad group of artists across the United States connected to each other through exhibitions, galleries, and collectives, offering a fresh perspective on how artists in the 1960s harnessed psychoanalysis, wordplay, and assemblage, among other strategies, to create new horizons for subject matter and form that continue to reverberate in American art today.
