Alan J. Shields (February 4, 1944 – December 13, 2005) was an American painter, and for a time during the 1980s, had a secondary career as a commercial boat operator, including as ferryboat captain.

Introduction

He came to prominence in the 1970s with brightly colored and sewn three-dimensional paintings. He constructed handmade books, and was an accomplished watercolorist and printmaker, often using handmade paper.
