Raymond Saunders

Introduction

Raymond Jennings Saunders (October 28, 1934 – July 19, 2025) was an American visual artist known for his multimedia paintings which often have sociopolitical undertones, and which incorporate assemblage, drawing, collage and found text. Saunders is also recognized for his installation, sculpture, and curatorial work.

Introduction

San Francisco Bay Area African-American artist known for works that incorporated collage, drawing, painting, and found text. He also worked with installation and curation. He resisted being pigeonholed and in 1967 he published a pamphlet entitled "Black Is a Color" arguing that Black artists should not feel pressure to advance social or political goals in their work.
