Cauleen Smith draws on experimental film, non-Western cosmologies, poetry, and science fiction to create works that reflect on memory and Afro-diasporic histories. Mutualities, her first solo exhibition in New York, presents two films, Sojourner (2018) and Pilgrim (2017), shown in installation environments created specifically for the Whitney, along with a group of new drawings collectively titled Firespitters (2020).
