Robert Mangold

Untitled (for Artists Space).
1995

In 1994 and 1995, Robert Mangold worked on the Curved Plane/Figure Series, which utilizes ellipses drawn with black pencil and abutting panels of multiple colors to create oppositions between the flat painted surfaces (planes) and the illusionistic results of the torqued linear forms (figures). The ellipses seem to be rotating in space, a sensation of movement that Mangold enhances by drawing them with a line that continues across two different background colors. The artist explored a similar composition in Untitled (for Artists Space), an etching with aquatint he produced to benefit the endowment of the venerable New York non-profit organization.
