Mia Locks: Los límites de lo que un ejecutante puede hacer y la frecuencia con la que puede estar en la terraza, debido al clima y a la resistencia, fue un tema del que hablamos mucho; hablamos acerca de lo que era posible pero también lo que tenía sentido para esta obra.

Creo que Pups, como nos gusta llamarlos, decidieron usar un maniquí, aunque se active esporádicamente, para mantener una sensación de continuidad del lugar, de la posición, en vez de dejar una suerte de espacio en blanco. Existe una noción de libertad, o la noción de la Dama Libertad y de todo tipo de asociaciones que tenemos con la Estatua de la Libertad, la cual no se va y regresa, sino que forma parte constante del paisaje de esta exposición.

Narrator: A veces, Liberté es representada por actores. En otras ocasiones, la obra está representada por un maniquí.

Mia Locks: Al verla con un actor, la experiencia es muy diferente. Es ver a otro ser humano que carga el peso de esta antorcha, lo cual es agotador físicamente.

Mia Locks: The limits of what a performer can do, and how often a performer can be out on that terrace, both because of weather but also because of endurance, was a conversation that we talked a lot about what was possible, but also what would make sense for this work.

And part of the reason that I think Pups, as we like to call them, decided to have a mannequin instead of just having a kind of blank space was to have a certain sense of ongoingness, of that place or that position, even if it’s only activated sporadically. But there is this notion of liberty, or this notion of Lady Liberty, or of all of the kind of associations we have with the Statue of Liberty, that it doesn’t go away and come back, but that it’s actually an ongoing part of the landscape of the show.

Mia Locks: So Puppies Puppies is obviously a moniker. They shield their true identity. I think for them, the figure of the artist or the kind of role of the artist is something that’s very much a question in the work. And they approach this using different icons or even clichés. For instance, the Statue of Liberty, here in New York, is one of the most iconic images, but also a very common costume that you see in either in Times Square or, you know, street performers.

And I think what’s interesting for them is this idea of a really powerful symbol, which of course relates to immigration into this country, but also has this lightheartedness to it. And I think that that work can be read in both of those ways.

Narrator: Sometimes, Liberté is enacted by a live performer.  At other times, the work is embodied by a mannequin.

Mia Locks: And if you’re here looking at a live performer you’ll have a very different experience of watching another human literally carry that burden of this torch, and how tiring it is for them physically to hold this object.

Mia Locks: Puppies Puppies es obviamente un sobrenombre. Protege sus identidades verdaderas. Creo que para ellos, la figura del artista o el tipo de papel que desempeña el artista es una pregunta grande en la obra, y lo abordan usando diferentes iconos o incluso clichés. Por ejemplo, la Estatua de la Libertad, aquí en Nueva York, es una de las imágenes más icónicas, pero también es muy común verla en Times Square o en performances callejeros.

Creo que a Puppies Puppies les interesa esta idea de un símbolo verdaderamente poderoso, que sin duda se relaciona con la migración a este país, aunque también la abordan con cierto desenfado. Creo que la obra puede leerse de las dos maneras.
