Welcome to Whitney Stories
Nov 4, 2013

"The Whitney is an idea, not a building."
—Flora Miller Biddle, granddaughter of founder Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney

The Whitney Museum is made up of multiple narratives which have emerged over the course of its eighty-two year history, and which continue to develop as the Museum prepares to move downtown with a new building opening in spring 2015. Founded in 2011, Whitney Stories invites you to engage with these accounts as they take shape by presenting a behind-the-scenes look at the Museum’s ongoing transformation.

Like any good story, the Whitney’s is composed of compelling characters—a new series of fifteen short films, which will be released over the next two years, focuses on these individuals: artists, members of the new building construction team, art conservators, curators, Museum guards, and educators. Directed by New York-based filmmaker Matt Wolf, the series presents diverse perspectives on the Museum’s past, present, and future.

Produced and published by Whitney staff, Whitney Stories grows and changes as the Museum does. Follow the Whitney on Twitter, Facebook, and Tumblr to keep up with progress as the Whitney’s story unfolds.
