Narrator: Welcome to the 2014 Whitney Biennial, and to the new Whitney Guide. You can use this Windows Phone App to explore the Museum on your own or to take a guided tour. There’s one tour that focuses on the voices of the artists themselves, and a shorter tour that will give you a taste of what this year’s Biennial is all about. As you explore, you’ll also hear behind-the-scenes commentary from the curators. This guide also contains information about daily performances and other events that you won’t want to miss.
For this year’s Biennial, the Whitney Museum invited three curators from outside the museum—Stuart Comer, Anthony Elms, and Michelle Grabner—each to organize a floor of the Biennial. At the time they were invited to curate the exhibition, they were all based outside of New York, and had very different professional backgrounds and institutional affiliations. Their collaboration has allowed each curator to be adventurous, exploring his or her own passions. As a result, the three floors have distinct personalities, focusing on different artistic media, and representing a diverse spectrum of contemporary ideas.
Please enjoy the exhibition—you can begin on any floor you like.
