The Kamoinge Workshop: Artists on Artists

Mar 1, 2021

The word "Kamoinge" comes from the language of the Kikuyu people of Kenya, meaning "a group of people acting together." The name chosen by the Kamoinge Workshop, a collective of Black photographers established in New York City in 1963, reflects the ideal that animated the group. In this video, hear some of these artists describe their collaborators. Working Together: The Photographers of the Kamoinge Workshop is organized by the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. The exhibition is on view at the Whitney through March 28, 2020.
