A principios de la década de 1940, Evans comenzó a crear obras luminosas con patrones geométricos y orgánicos que irradiaban simétricamente desde el centro hacia el exterior. Aunque Evans nunca articuló la conexión, estas obras resuenan con la tradición de mandalas hindúes y budistas, que emplean formas geométricas y figurativas en arreglos simétricos, como herramientas para la concentración espiritual o de meditación. Sin título (Jano con helechos azules), 1945

Evans se sentía atraída por la historia antigua y la mitología desde niña, afirmó: "Durante mis primeros años en la escuela no me interesaba nada más que la historia. Amaba leer sobre los dioses...me encantaba estudiar sobre los griegos y los troyanos y todo ese tipo de cosas...Es todo lo que estudiaba, todo lo que amaba". Su pasión por la mitología pudo haber inspirado las formas simétricas y especulares de Jano, que surgieron en sus dibujos en la década de 1940.
