"I began thinking about what it means for a photograph to have a subject: if the subject of a photograph is always that thing that is depicted or if it can also be the idea of seeing, the process of looking."—Zoe Leonard, 2012

In this talk, teaching fellow Joshua Lubin-Levy will explore the ways in which artists use careful empirical observation to interrogate the process of vision. The sculptures and photographs of Zoe Leonard use a variety of strategies to carefully and reflectively calibrate vision. A counter-example to the speed and disposability of image culture today, her work asks the viewer to reengage with how we see and how we come to know and make sense of the world around us. By tracing a concern with empirical observation through the work of artists such as Edward Hopper—who described his mode of working as “from the fact”—this talk will spotlight the complex relationship between observable reality and subjective experience. A wine reception will be availabe throughout the event.
