Inspired by works on view in Fast Forward: Painting from the 1980s, this course explores the wide-ranging artistic practices that defined the 1980s and have shaped the contemporary American art world. This pivotal decade continues to influence the art of today. We will examine Street Art, the art scenes of the Lower East Side and the East Village, AIDS activism, feminism, and the return of painting. Artists to be featured include Jean-Michel Basquiat, the Guerilla Girls, Susan Rothenberg, Nancy Spero, David Wojnarowicz, and Martin Wong.
