Jennifer West’s Flashlight Filmstrip Projections

Sat, Dec 10, 2016
6 pm

Los Angeles-based artist Jennifer West appears in person to activate with the audience a new iteration of her interactive cinematic installation Flashlight Filmstrip Projections. In this work, originally conceived as a "swan song to celluloid," plexiglass panels lined with 35 and 70mm filmstrips are hung in the darkened space. The audience is invited to use powerful flashlights to individually and collectively project the filmstrip images assembled by the artist, which include as materials castoffs from Hollywood productions, hand-painted 70mm film leader, footage shot on 35mm of text, hand-shadow shadow play, Google maps, Wikipedia and images searches and YouTube compilations of early cinema footage of Loïe Fuller’s Serpentine Dance

Dreamlands: Expanded is a series of expanded cinema events organized by Microscope Gallery in collaboration with the Whitney as part of the exhibition Dreamlands: Immersive Cinema and Art, 1905–2016.

Tickets for this event are available for purchase here.

Please note: Flashlight Filmstrip Projections will be on view at Microscope Gallery from December 10–12 (1–6 pm).
All Dreamlands: Expanded events take place at Microscope Gallery, with the exception of Steam Screens and The Owl Flies at Twilight, which will both be presented at Knockdown Center in Maspeth, Queens.
