Andy Warhol—From A to B and Back Again includes numerous portraits, as well as self-portraits, from every decade in Warhol’s career. These portraits, including the 472 Screen Tests shot by Warhol between 1964 and 1966, trace the network of people who were drawn to Warhol and with whom he came into contact. Featuring a wide range of individuals, including movie stars, artists, collectors, gallerists, entertainers, tycoons, sports and political figures, and even royalty, Warhol’s portraiture, in every medium, could be considered akin to today’s social media networks: a document of Warhol’s social and artistic connections. In the screen tests and his other filmic portraits, Warhol was able to accomplish in film that was simply impossible in other media. By exploiting the film’s durational aspect, Warhol subjected his sitters to the unmitigated scrutiny of the camera, thus provoking attributes of their personality that might otherwise have remained hidden.
