Floor Three, Susan and John Hess Family Theater

In this art-making workshop led by artist Mark Joshua Epstein, visitors are invited to create collages with a variety of media in response to a live performance by the preeminent jazz drummer Andrew Cyrille. The workshop explores synesthesia, a phenomenon in which an individual's senses overlap: a synesthete might hear an image or smell a sound. The condition has long fascinated filmmakers, whose art combines visual and aural experiences.

Andrew Cyrille is one of the greatest free jazz drummers of his generation. He made his reputation with the Cecil Taylor Unit, which he played with from 1964 to 1975, establishing himself as a key innovator. Cyrille has recorded or performed with numerous musicians, including Carla Bley, Butch Morris, David Murray and Irène Schweizer. Cyrille is currently a member of the group Trio 3 with Oliver Lake and Reggie Workman.

Mark Joshua Epstein (b. 1979) is a visual artist based in New York. Recent exhibitions include solo presentations at Biquini Wax in Mexico City and Brian Morris Gallery, New York, and a recent two-person project with Will Hutnick at Demo Projects in Springfield, Illinois. Epstein has participated in numerous residency programs including the Millay Colony, the Macdowell Colony and the Saltonstall Foundation.

This program is held in connection with the exhibition Dreamlands: Immersive Cinema and Art, 1905–2016.

This workshop is free with Museum admission.
