Open to all ages
Artists of all ages are invited to create their own printed work of art using a wide array of rubber stamps. Experiment with different stamps, colors, and repeated images to build your own composition, taking inspiration from Green Coca-Cola Bottles by Andy Warhol, on view in “Untitled” (America).
Green Coca-Cola Bottles was made the same year Andy Warhol developed his signature silkscreen technique, which allowed him to create images using a process similar to mass production.
Here, the same Coca-Cola bottle is repeated in neat rows above the company’s logo. At first glance, it might look like the images of the bottles were made by a machine. However, Warhol likely stamped each bottle by hand using a carved woodblock. Because of this, no two bottles are the same. Some are darker or lighter, some are clearer than others, and some are slightly tilted.
These small differences break the strict grid and make the work feel both handmade and mass-produced at the same time. In this way, Warhol highlights and reflects on American consumer culture and the everyday products people see everywhere.
