You are invited to Open Studio From Home, free weekly online art classes with Whitney educators! Participants will experiment, create, and learn together with at-home art materials.
In Signs of Love, Ree Morton combined painting, sculpture, and aspects of theater design, using the wall and floor as both a canvas and a stage. She made the letters and some of the other objects out of Celastic, a kind of plastic that is flexible when wet and hard when dry. While the work’s title takes love as its subject matter, the other parts of the work are more mysterious: roses, ladders, and words on the wall gesture to meanings that Morton leaves the viewer to interpret.
Together, we will take a close look at all the symbols, words, and images Ree Morton included in Signs of Love. Then we will invent our own emojis representing our special sign of love!
