Monastic Residency: Derek Chan

May 12–23, 2010

Sculpture Court

Wednesday, May 12–Sunday, May 23

Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday noon–6 pm; Fridays 1–6 pm

Chicago-based painter Derek Chan began his residency earlier in the year. Each day, Chan draws in what  can be considered a diary of thoughts on structures, on being an Asian American living in an African American neighborhood, and on the challenges of painting. Chan will use his time at the Whitney to question his own practice, extroversion, and consistency.

This event is one in a series of "monastic residencies" organized by 2010 artist Theaster Gates, who will collaborate with academics, artists, and street musicians in the Museum’s Sculpture Court throughout the duration of the Biennial.

This event is free with museum admission; no special tickets or reservations are required.
