Working Together features fourteen early members of the Kamoinge Workshop, a collective founded in 1963 by a group of Black photographers based in New York. The thematic presentation includes depictions of day-to-day life as well as abstract or surreal images and visual celebrations of music. Many of the artists photographed the civil rights movement and traveled to Guyana, Senegal, and other countries, making works that express a sense of global community. Distinct in style and approach, the artists shared a perspective voiced by member Louis Draper: “We speak of our lives as only we can.”
