Drop-in Artmaking Workshop
Floor Three, Artspace
7:15–9:45 pm

Join artist Mark Joshua Epstein in a collage-making activity inspired by the work of Whitney Biennial artist Shara Hughes. Hughes makes dream-like paintings of imaginary landscapes that incorporate both familiar and unfamiliar forms. For this studio session we will be working in collage, using memory and imagination to conjure up our own unique landscapes. Create and collage for a few minutes—or longer! First come, first served.

Mark Joshua Epstein (b. 1979) is a visual artist and independent curator based in New York. Recent solo exhibitions include Vane Gallery in Newcastle, England and Biquini Wax in Mexico City. Epstein has participated in numerous residency programs including the Millay Colony, the Macdowell Colony and the Saltonstall Foundation.

Critical Looking Seminar
Floor Five, Rosado-Seijo’s Salón-Sala-Saló (Classroom/Gallery/Classroom)
7:30, 8:15, 9 pm

Artists have long explored how vision correlates to ideas of power. Works of art often ask us to consider who is looking, whom or what is being looked at, and how the visibility conferred by art can effect real-world change. Using works from the Biennial and the Whitney’s collection as touchstones, this participatory seminar led by teaching fellow Aliza Shvarts will explore how art can enact and demand a critical awareness—one that asks us to attend to social and political issues beyond the museum walls.
