Learning Series Members in the Curate Your Own Program

In the decades following World War II, artists around the globe responded to the new era with expanded visual and material vocabularies, from the explosive boldness of painterly abstraction and the clutter of assemblage to the refinement of hard-edged abstraction and the dynamism of Pop art. Advances in industrial technology further allowed artists to exploit new materials allowing for inventive new forms appearing in works from the 1960s and 1970s. This two part class will explore the art of the post-war period, looking at artists active in the United States as well as important international figures. Classroom lectures will focus on artists from Europe and Latin America, providing an international context and a counterpoint for in-gallery viewing and discussion of contemporaneous artworks on view in America Is Hard to See and The Whitney's Collection.
