Assistant curator Claire K. Henry discusses the Andy Warhol Film Project, a decades-long collaboration between the Whitney and the Museum of Modern Art. From 1963 through 1968, Warhol produced nearly 650 films, in styles ranging from minimalist avant-garde to commercial "sexploitation." Shortly afterwards, the artist withdrew his films from distribution, and for the next twenty years, this body of work was known only from reviews and verbal accounts. In 1982, with the artist’s permission, the Whitney and MoMA began the work of preserving, researching, and exhibiting the films. Project milestones include exhibitions in 1988 and 1994 as well as the publication of the first volume of The Films of Andy Warhol Catalog Raisonné in 2006. Henry will introduce the project, share film excerpts, and explore some of the ways in which Warhol’s films enrich our understanding of his work in other media and shed light on the work of his contemporaries.
