John C. Welchman and Scott Benzel discuss Mike Kelley's first—and last—public art project, Mobile Homestead (2006– ). Welchman will examine some of the contexts of Kelley's relation to institutions in general and public art in particular, as well as the artist's longstanding engagements with his home town of Detroit; basements and subterranean spaces; and with the 'truths' and projected fictions of autobiography. Benzel, who worked with Kelley during several visits to Detroit, will discuss Kelley's approach to this unique project.
John C. Welchman is Professor of Art History and Criticism at UCSD and co-director of the Mike Kelley Foundation for the Arts. Scott Benzel is an artist and composer living and working in Los Angeles. A frequent musical collaborator with Mike Kelley, Benzel produced the video Mobile Homestead.
Free with Museum admission. Admittance is on a first-come, first-seated basis until capacity is reached. Late admittance is strongly discouraged, so please arrive early.
