Artists such as Jay DeFeo, Jacob Lawrence, and Stuart Davis used paint in very different ways. DeFeo often applied paint to canvas in thick layers, while Lawrence and Davis created flat planes of vivid color. Explore the many different painting styles on view in American Legends and Jay DeFeo: A Retrospective before heading to the Whitney Studio to experiment with paint in your own way.
