Floor Three, Seminar Room, Laurie M. Tisch Education Center
In this course, we will consider the moving image as a medium that explores the terrains of memory, history, dreams, and alternative realities; spaces populated by cyborgs, specters, and post-human bodies. We will begin by looking at the early history of photography, emphasizing genres such as spirit photography and motion studies, which allowed viewers to see beyond ordinary perception. Then we will turn to the beginnings of film and move through video to contemporary moving image technologies used by artists including Philippe Parreno, Trisha Baga, and Josiah McElheny, among others. This course is held in connection with the exhibitions Dreamlands: Immersive Cinema and Art, 1905–2016 and Human Interest: Portraits from the Whitney's Collection.
Instructor: Paula Burleigh is a Joan Tisch Teaching Fellow at the Whitney and a PhD candidate in Art History at the CUNY Graduate Center, where she is writing her dissertation about the use of archaic forms in a range of utopian projects in Western Europe during the 1960s. Paula has taught undergraduate courses in Art History and the History of Photography at CUNY Baruch College and adult education courses at MoMA. She currently teaches at Bard High School Early College.
