Since its founding, the Whitney has strived to be the artists’ museum. When the Whitney invites artists to work with the Museum, they are not just given a gallery space to showcase their work—artists are encouraged to experiment and engage actively in the process of exhibition making. This engagement will only deepen in the new building, where flexible special exhibition spaces will enable artists to collaborate with the Museum’s curators to create a diverse range of experiences through which audiences can discover their art. In this conversation, associate curator Christopher Y. Lew will speak with guest artists about their work and process, the Whitney’s significance for artists living in the twenty-first century, and the possibilities for artist-driven programs at the new Whitney.
