The Whitney began commissioning artist projects on the site of the new building in 2010, but even at that time, the Museum was building on a long history of artists working and living in the various historic neighborhoods of downtown Manhattan. This talk will survey just a few highlights from this rich and complex history, spotlighting a handful of artists and artworks with strong ties to the Museum.
