What does Pride mean to you? Visitors of all ages are invited to get creative and contribute to the Whitney Community Pride Mural. Add your own drawings, messages, and designs throughout the day as the mural grows into a collective celebration of Pride, creativity, and community.
The month of June is also known as Pride Month, which centers the LGBTQ+ community and its history. Pride first started as a political march in 1970 one year after the Stonewall Riots. During these riots, the LGBTQ+ community fought back and protested against police who raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York City (a mere fifteen-minute walk from the Whitney). Pride now takes place all over the world and creates space for the LGBTQ+ community to feel safe, welcomed, affirmed, and celebrated.
