About the Performance

Payne has previously performed CHILL OUT in Los Angeles, Detroit, and other cities around the world. Describing the experience for Way Out West festival in Gothenburg, Sweden in 2014, writer William Pym explained:

“Oliver Payne’s CHILL OUT invites participants to switch off and listen to this evocative record. Chill Out by The KLF is a 44-minute live soundscape conjuring an imagined journey through America’s deep south through samples, sound effects and synthesizers; it is a unique experiment in the history of modern recorded music. Payne wants people to experience it and feel it deeply on its terms. Getting anybody to do anything for 44 minutes without checking Instagram is impossible, so he uses a security guard who has a job to do. Forcing people to chill out is a paradoxical act. But militancy is a central part of punk in its raw form. No compromise. Bouncers are the enemy, for sure, but numbness is a bigger enemy.”

This program is organized in conjunction with Laura Owens in collaboration with 356 S. Mission Rd.

The Susan and John Hess Family Theater is equipped with an induction loop and infrared assistive listening system. Accessible seating is available.
