Theaster Gates creates installations that explore places and ideas from his own life, ranging from his hometown neighborhood in Chicago to tea houses in Japan. For his outdoor installation in the 2010 Whitney Biennial, Gates created a space out of discarded wooden boards for visitors to interact with. Families had the opportunity to explore the installation and make their own spaces.
