Artist’s Choice: Elaine Reichek

March 17, 2012

For the 2012 Biennial exhibition, artist Elaine Reichek showed embroidered “drawings” inspired by the Greek myth of Ariadne who helped the young warrior Theseus to find his way out of the Minotaur’s labyrinth by giving him a thread to follow. In her series Ariadne’s Thread (2008– ), Reichek employs the same material used by Ariadne in the myth to recreate visuals from this famous tale by stitching them into pictures. Reichek discussed her work with families in the galleries, explaining how art can tell a story. She then led a hands-on project where families created books with their own original mythical stories inspired by images which Reichek provided.
