Artist’s Choice: Alicia Hall Moran and Jason Moran
May 12, 2012
Soprano Alicia Hall Moran and jazz pianist Jason Moran presented five days of live music for their residency in the Biennial 2012 exhibition. Their project, titled BLEED (2012), celebrated the power of performance to synthesize many different artistic disciplines—art, music, dance, theater, and literature. For the workshop the Morans created a special interactive performance for families which explored the connection between jazz music and dance. Participants watched a choreographed performance followed by a discussion about concepts such as rhythm and volume. The artists then introduced parents and their children to a series of movements related to sound. To conclude the workshop, families came up with their own movement “phrases” inspired by the Morans’ improvisational approach to jazz music.
