In Memory: Richard D. Marshall
1947–2014
The Whitney Museum of American Art is greatly saddened by the loss of Richard D. Marshall, curator, art historian and dear friend to the Museum. A graduate of the Whitney’s Independent Study Program, Richard’s twenty-year tenure at the Museum began in 1973. During his prolific career at the Whitney he curated more than two dozen exhibitions including six co-curated Biennials as well as exhibitions of works by American masters from Isamu Noguchi, Alexander calder and Louise Nevelson to Claes Oldenburg, James Rosenquist and Joel Shapiro. In particular, he will always be remembered for the seminal retrospectives of artists Alex Katz, Robert Mapplethorpe and Jean-Michel Basquiat and two historic exhibitions New Image Painting and American Art Since 1970 and The New Sculpture 1965–75: Between Geometry and Gesture (co-curated). In recent years Richard was the Curator of the Lever House Art Collection and he independently curated numerous international exhibitions by artists including Georgia O'Keeffe, Louise Bourgeois and Ed Ruscha. We will greatly miss his great "eye," enthusiastic support of artists, and wonderful wit. Our most heartfelt condolences go out to his husband, the esteemed architect, Bill Georgis.
