Narrator: Mauss deliberately leaves the relationship between the elements of his installation open to interpretation—including the works by the other artists.
Nick Mauss: I think the whole arena of these works together, in front of and then beyond the space, have been given a new context where received ideas about them fall away and you can look at them and create new relationships.
There’s this almost incomprehensible grouping of words on one of the Eyre De Lanux drawings which, for me, almost sums up how I feel about the entire thing. What it says is, “synthèse,” I believe is the French word for “synthesis,” and then it says “I have it,” and the last word is, “heart.” So as long as I’ve sort of planned this, and worked on this piece, it’s still really touching for me to see this empty room–in a way it’s like this kind of void, but a different void than I’d ever kind of pictured before.
