The Story Behind 'Andrew Myrick— Let Em Eat Grass' | Laura Phipps on Sixties Surreal
Jan 8, 2026
This painting by T.C. Cannon depicts trader Andrew Myrick (1832–62) who is responsible for starving the Dakota people by withholding grain. The grass here refers to Myrick famously stating, "So far as I am concerned, if they are hungry let them eat grass or their own dung." See the exhibition Sixties Surreal through January 19th at the Whitney.
