Nasha Thomas | Edges of Ailey | Interviews | Alvin Ailey and Me

Apr 18, 2025

Nasha Thomas, former member of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and current National Director of Ailey Camp and Spokesperson and Master Teacher for Arts in Education, spoke with us about her experiences with Alvin and the company. Nasha was an AILEY company member from 1986 through 1998, and she reflects on her time dancing with the company, recalling the moment when she auditioned for Alvin and how that memory remains vivid in her mind today. She also shares what it means to her to teach at Ailey Camp and to see the impact that it has on her students. In her words, "Mr. Ailey was a giver, and that's something that's very important and special to me, and it's something we need a lot more of. There are not a lot of givers out there." We are thrilled to share a powerful project, Alvin Ailey and Me, that celebrates the enduring legacy and influence of iconic dancer, choreographer, and artist Alvin Ailey. Alvin Ailey and Me asks members of the public to share personal stories of how Alvin Ailey’s life and work has impacted, inspired, and changed them.
