Alvin Ailey and Me: Masazumi Chaya | Edges of Ailey | Interviews

Feb 7, 2025

Masazumi Chaya, who danced with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater as a member of the company from 1972 through 1988, followed by positions as Rehearsal Director and Associate Artistic Director, spoke with us about his time working with AILEY. He discusses the close relationship that he had with Alvin Ailey, memories of his time working with Ailey and the company, and how much it means to him to see the Edges of Ailey exhibition at the Whitney.

We are thrilled to share a powerful project, Alvin Ailey and Me, that celebrates the enduring legacy and influence of iconic dancer, choreographer, and artist Alvin Ailey. Alvin Ailey and Me asks members of the public to share personal stories of how Alvin Ailey’s life and work has impacted, inspired, and changed them. We invite you to participate in the project by submitting a digital letter online through whitney.org/AlvinAileyandMe or writing a letter in person at the Museum during Free Friday Nights from 5 to 10 pm every Friday:
