Opening Night at Studio 54: The Antonio Archives and Alvin Ailey

Dec 31, 2024

Dancing our way into the new year! For the opening night of Studio 54 in 1977, Antonio Lopez and Juan Ramos designed these costumes to be worn by AILEY dancers. In conjunction with our Edges of Ailey exhibition, we spoke with artist and President of the Antonio Archives, Paul Caranicas, who describes the costumes as "street fashion but before its time." These costumes were designed by Antonio Lopez and Juan Ramos for AILEY dancers to be worn on the opening night of Studio 54 in 1977.

The exhibition celebrates the life, dances, influences, and enduring legacy of visionary artist and choreographer Alvin Ailey through visual art, live performance, music, archival materials, and a multi-screen video installation.
