Episode 3: Resistance
Nov 30, 2023
"no existe un mundo poshuracán: Puerto Rican Art in the Wake of Hurricane Maria" is organized to coincide with the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Maria—a high-end Category 4 storm that hit Puerto Rico on September 20, 2017. The exhibition explores how artists have responded to the transformative years since that event by bringing together more than fifty artworks made over the last five years by an intergenerational group of more than fifteen artists from Puerto Rico and the diaspora. Resistance, the final installment in Whitney's three-part series for "no existe un mundo poshuracán”, looks at the inherently political nature of artmaking in Puerto Rico and across the diaspora. In this episode, several of the artists featured in the exhibition discuss how both historic and contemporary events have shaped their practices and how despite the constant threat of ecological and political disasters, the resilience of Puerto Ricans across the globe allows them to have hope for a brighter future. For this episode’s Youtube Premiere, the show’s organizers Marcela Guerrero (Jennifer Rubio Associate Curator), Angelica Arbelaez (Rubio Butterfield Family Fellow), and several of the artists featured in the video will be present in the chat to answer audience questions.
