Inside the Whitney Biennial 2022: Session 1

Apr 29, 2022

Since the first edition in 1932, the Whitney Biennial has presented emerging and established artists who explore the fundamental issues of their time. This three-week course gives participants an in-depth view of the works in the 2022 exhibition and probes urgent questions it raises about the complexity of “American” identity, the tension between the personal and political, as well as the precarious and improvised nature of our current moment. We consider artists working in a range of media, including painting, sculpture, drawing, installation, film and video, and performance.

Josh Lubin-Levy is a Joan Tisch Senior Teaching Fellow at the Whitney and recently completed his Ph.D. in performance studies at NYU. For the past ten years, Lubin-Levy has worked as a dance dramaturg and performance curator, and is the editor-in-chief of the Movement Research Performance Journal. He currently teaches in the Department of Visual Studies at the New School and at Wesleyan University.
