Christopher Dunn: His interest was less in these figures of what's known as the velha guarda, the old guard of samba that were again seen as the bearers of cultural authenticity. But instead these figures that lived in the favela that were more marginalized. These were people that were transgressive in some ways. Perhaps sexually. People that were gay for example. Or transgender. Or used drugs. Or engaged in petty thievery, who lived on the margins of society. Those were the people that Hélio Oiticica sought out and hung out with.
