Círculos, radios, zigzags, ríos agrupa nueve pinturas recientes y una escultura a gran escala de Grace Rosario Perkins (n. 1986; Santa Fe, Nuevo México; Akimel O’odham/Diné). El título de la exposición describe petroglifos que conectan a la familia de la artista con sus tierras natales tribales en el suroeste de los Estados Unidos, incluyendo las aguas vitales pero amenazadas del río Gila y del río Grande. La influencia de estas antiguas tecnologías de narración visual se hace evidente en el arte rico en simbología de Perkins. Flores, estrellas, el sol y telarañas cobran una presencia significativa en los sistemas que crea la artista para documentar su vida. Perkins construye las superficies de sus pinturas densamente estratificada con pintura acrílica y de aerosol, materiales encontrados, objetos personales y fragmentos de textos a través del proceso de adición y redacción. Guiada por la intuición, encuentros cotidianos, la filosofía de “hágalo usted mismo”, la espiritualidad y medicina de plantas, la artista hace referencia a la cultura material y popular, mientras convergen con reflexiones más íntimas de duelo, amor y esperanza. Al trabajar con la abstracción se resiste a la representación reductiva de la identidad indígena, ofreciendo en su lugar una visión expansiva, arraigada tanto en el conocimiento ancestral como en las urgencias del presente.
