  • The exhibition includes multimedia artworks, paintings, sculptures, installations in space, and videos. We invite you to engage with these works but unless explicitly noted otherwise, please do not touch artworks in the exhibition.
  • The exhibition is enveloped by a surround video created by Josh Begley and Kya Lou with Adrienne Edwards. This video contains flashing and strobing effects that should be avoided by people who have photosensitive epilepsy or who may be susceptible to seizures.
  • Synchronous mobile captions for this video can be found here: https://captioner.whitney.org/work/120
  • The entire exhibition is filled with high volumes of sound, primarily from the surround video.
  • The exhibition contains very low lighting and walls and pedestals are painted a deep red.
  • Staff from Visitor Services will be stationed at the 5th floor elevators to help with way finding.
  • Labels for the artwork will be located on 6” pedestals stemming from the floor near the artwork.
  • In the section “Blackness in Dance”, there is a Lorna Simpson two-channel video on monitors that will have the subtle sounds of dancers dancing (feet tapping).
  • In the section “Black Music”, there is a work by Charles Gaines that will play music.
  • In the section “Ailey’s Influences”, there will be several videos that will have headphones. These are videos of different choreographers or dances that influenced and/or collaborated with Ailey.
  • Ear plugs are available at the elevators on the  5th floor. Ear defenders and fidgets are available upon request.
  • Benches are offered throughout the exhibition.
